Friday Flashback: October 1957

That handsome devil on the left is my dad, and he's got his arm around his younger sister, June.

Twenty-some years after this photo was taken, my dad's kidneys failed, and June gave him one of hers. In return, he had a jeweler fashion a small kidney charm out of gold that June wears on a chain around her neck.

Flash forward another twenty-plus years to today, and after two kidney transplants, a liver transplant, and a double nephrectomy, this week's test results show abnormal cells in his liver. Which could mean liver cancer, and we won't know for sure for several weeks.

The waiting is the hardest part.

Would the immunosuppressive drugs your father has been taking make cancer more likely to occur? In any case, what a terrible thing.

My thoughts are with you and your family. Waiting is so hard.

Oh, Ruth, hang in there. So scary. Hope the results prove to not have been worth the worry.

Oh, I am sorry. I hope the news is excellent when it comes. I'll keep you and your dad in my prayers.
